A blog post from Ellen Strickland, Community Programme Director at InternetNZ
1 September 2016
We are very excited to have Niels ten Oever visiting New Zealand next week. Niels is an international expert in human rights in a digital world, and is the Head of Digital at Article 19, an international organisation dedicated to defending freedom of expression and information.
There are a few events happening in Wellington that will give people a chance to engage with Niels and with the issues around human rights and the Internet.
On Wednesday 7 September, from 12.30pm - 1.30pm, we will have a public screening of the Net of Rights documentary at the InternetNZ Wellington offices. After the documentary finishes we will have a roundtable discussion on the relationship between the Internet and human rights, which will be led by Niels. For more information, and to register, please check out our website.
From 5pm - 7pm on Thursday 8 September, we will be hosting our second speaker series, 'Harassment and the Internet.' Niels will be joined by representatives from NetSafe and Women's Refuge to discuss harassment and the Internet, the harm it causes, how we can deal with it, and what we can do to help prevent it. The speaker series is another open event so come and join us. Drinks and nibbles will be provided before the talks begin. Please click here for more information and to register.
We are looking forward to hosting Niels next week and are excited about the many opportunities that the public will have to talk to Niels about the Internet and human rights.
