Private messaging not so private

There is a risk that each message you think you send privately could be read by your service provider, advertisers, and other organisations.

We have released a series of resources to help New Zealanders keep their messages free from prying eyes. The resources point to Signal, WhatsApp and ‘secret conversations’ in Facebook Messenger as channels of communication that have a higher level of privacy due to the use of encryption.

Visit for more info and to view the resources including a cool 30-second video worth a watch.

Come along to our Māori ICT presentation

On Thursday 26 January, from 4pm, we’re hosting an event in conjunction with MBIE focusing on attracting more Māori into the ICT sector.

Beth Goodwin - Principal Policy Advisor at MBIE - will lead the discussion. She will refer to the Māori me te Ao Hangarau 2015 (Māori ICT Report 2015) and then facilitate a discussion about how we can attract more Māori into ICT careers and improve the stats shown in the report. Drinks and nibbles will be provided.

Please RSVP by Tuesday 24 Jan here.

Read Andrew’s 2017 Internet predictions

Following on from his 2016 predictions (of which 7.5/10 came true!), our Deputy CE Andrew Cushen has made 10 Internet-related predictions for 2017. Read these here.

Hope you had a good break

We hope you had a relaxing break over Christmas and New Year and look forward to working with you. This year we will be continuing our work on our three focus areas - use, access and security. Our community grant rounds and Speaker Series events will be continuing and we will be hosting our annual NetHui event later in the year. Keep a close eye on your monthly dotNews to stay up to date.
