Being able to manage your account online isn’t just convenient – for thousands of New Zealanders with disabilities it is essential to managing their Internet connection. Digital account management, which is optimised for use with assistive technology, means everyone can use the Internet.
Why we care
Because the Internet should be for everyone. We believe that having account and billing information available online makes it much easier for more New Zealanders to access the Internet, especially if those New Zealanders have a disability.
Because human rights should apply online. The New Zealand Bill of Rights Act is explicit about non-discrimination and minority rights. We believe that part of fulfilling this obligation involves doing all we can to make access to the Internet easier for people with disabilities.
Why should you care?
A quarter of New Zealanders report having some form of impairment that can make it hard to access billing and account information. While assistive technologies such as screen-readers and magnifiers are powerful tools, information still needs to be correctly formatted and optimised to work with them.
The provision of well-structured information, good use of colour contrast and plain English is key to this accessibility. This will empower customers with vision impairment to use technology that grants them greater independence.
