Concerns and safety

Three-quarters of New Zealanders are worried about children accessing inappropriate material online. The other top concerns are cyber bullying, security of personal data, online crime and the Internet being used to share dangerous or discriminatory messages. There is a significant increase in being concerned about identity theft, "misinformation", the Internet being a forum for extremist material and hate speech, and online conspiracy theories this year.

Online conspiracy theories, misinformation and extremist material and hate speech were the concerns with the most significant increases for those who are both 'very' and 'extremely' concerned

New Zealanders' concern about privacy and security continues to rise, with two thirds reporting that they have decided not to use an online service in the past year due to privacy and security concerns.
