Brent Carey leaving Domain Name Commission to become Netsafe CEO

The Domain Name Commission Limited (DNCL), a subsidiary of InternetNZ, has accepted the resignation of Brent Carey who is stepping down as the Domain Name Commissioner to become the CEO of Netsafe.

“It is the right time for the DNCL Board to consider who it should have as New Zealand’s third Domain Name Commissioner,” says Mr Carey.

“It has been a privilege to have worked alongside a committed and capable team and a workplace that was recognised as an Employer of Choice in 2021.

“The organisation has many opportunities and challenges ahead as it continues to improve fairness in the .nz domain name market and responds to domain name abuse and more businesses getting themselves online.

“The past four and a half years have been very rewarding, with significant changes and many challenges, and I look forward to what is next for the Domain Name Commission” he says. 

Acting Domain Name Commissioner Board Chair, Andrew Cushen, says Brent has been a strong leader at the Domain Name Commission since 2017. 

“During this time he helped rewrite the policy rules for the .nz domain name space, implemented and enforced a privacy option for the .nz register, including settling a number of US litigation matters, and launched an online dispute resolution platform. 

“His oversight of the .nz domain space during the time of the 15 March Mosque attacks and the global pandemic has seen new approaches developed with the local internet community for responding to domain name issues. 

“Brent’s work to change our focus from purely thinking about the infrastructure we run to the role we play in tackling domain name abuse will have lasting impacts both within the .nz domain name space and across the region.

“I thank Brent, on behalf of our board, for his service to DNCL and the global domain name community and wish him the very best in his new role as Chief Executive of Netsafe announced by the Netsafe Board today,” says Mr Cushen. 

Brent’s last day with the DNCL will be Friday 29 April. Isobel Egerton, Assistant Domain Name Commissioner is to be the Interim Domain Name Commissioner.
