Long live NetHui!

NetHui is a yearly event where the community comes together to talk about the challenges and opportunities the Internet brings to us all - personally and professionally. With the Christchurch Call in mind, the theme for NetHui 2019 was safety, inclusion and wellbeing on the open Internet.
There were so many highlights over the two days - here’s some that stand out to us:
- Our Chief Executive Jordan Carter presented a powerful speech to set the scene for the conference. He talked to the Christchurch Call and urged to have these hard but important conversations to shape the Internet that we need.
- We had keynotes from Jillian York from the EFF (starts from min 48 of the video) who challenged the ideas of what openness online really means, and how it isn’t incompatible with freedom of expression and the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. You can watch the livestream recordings from the keynotes, panels and break out sessions here.
For the first time at NetHui, we had action planning sessions at the end of both days. Each discussion session had the opportunity to share with the room what actions need to happen from their discussion. The challenge for all of you is to keep your actions, commits and ideas flowing outside of NetHui, and to work together to help make our Internet safer, more inclusive and more wellbeing oriented by developing these ideas. We’ll be doing our bit by keeping you posted on action plan progress and you are more than welcome to join us in this journey! Just email us at nethui@internetnz.net.nz and we’ll be in touch.
We also challenged our delegates to commit to being more secure online. Whether it be enabling a lock code on their mobile phone or commit to using good password hygiene. Check out our ways to help to be more secure online.
Again, thank you to all the folks that attended - all 400 of you! We hope to see you at NetHui next year, either in person or online! (Location and dates TBC).
