The Broadband Map — an unsung hero of InternetNZ
The .nz team •

You’ve probably used it yourself but like many other New Zealanders you might not be aware that the Broadband Map — a free tool for checking broadband options at properties across Aotearoa — is run by us here at InternetNZ.
It’s been nearly ten years since the Broadband Map was first made available and since then it’s helped many New Zealanders, playing a key role in getting us connected to the Internet.
What is the Broadband Map and how does it work?
Broadband Map NZ provides New Zealanders quality information about broadband options, speeds, and providers at any location in Aotearoa. Built and supported by InternetNZ, it uses aggregated coverage data from Internet service providers.
New Zealanders can use the map directly through the website Broadbandmap.nz. Our Internet coverage information is also available through lots of other New Zealand websites via Application Programming Interface (API) — you’ve likely seen it on property listings or broadband plan comparison resources. We combine the data sets from providers and merge them into the technology layers you see on the map: fibre, VDSL, ADSL, and fixed wireless.
How you can use it
Because we’ve got the coverage data, we can then provide an address search feature that allows you to find out what broadband technologies are available at any address in Aotearoa. You can also drop a pin anywhere on the map and a list of available providers will appear in the left hand panel.
If you are house-hunting, you can install Broadband Map NZ as a web application on your phone so you can have information about Internet options at your fingertips at every open house.

CAPTION If you've moved house in the last ten years, chances are you've used the Broadband Map!
A service used all around the country, every day
As of January 2025, BBMap has 44 data providers (fibre, cable, ADSL, VDSL, wireless). The complete list is available on the website. A big shout out to all the providers working with us to bring the Broadband Map to Aotearoa!
The number of users is nothing to sneeze at, either. In 2024, almost 2.7 million address searches were done via Broadband Map website and API, that’s 224,700 searches a month.
What’s next for the product our staff affectionately call BBMap?
We’re working on keeping the coverage data up to date, and looking at adding even more providers and broadband technologies on the map.
If your data provider isn’t on the BBMap, let us know at bbmap@internetnz.net.nz and we'll reach out to them to see if we can get them added.
