About InternetNZ | Ipurangi Aotearoa
Who are we?
Check out this video to see what we're all about!
InternetNZ | Ipurangi Aotearoa operates the .nz domain space. We ensure all domain names ending with .nz are available for people and businesses in Aotearoa to function and thrive online.
We're not government funded — we're a not-for-profit organisation. The money we receive from .nz domain names goes back into the community. We provide grants, help to fund other organisations, and advocate for an accessible and safe Internet that benefits everyone in Aotearoa.
We are also a member organisation. You can join us as a member to be in the know, have a say in our direction, stand for the Board, vote in elections, or simply because you believe in our cause.
Our purpose
We are the home of .nz, and we work for an Internet that benefits all of Aotearoa.

Ngākau nui – we care, connect, and enable
We place people, communities and connections at the heart of .nz, working to create an inclusive digital space for everyone in Aotearoa.
Our whakatauākī
In January 2017, we were delighted to announce that Takawai Murphy from Ngāti Manawa, Ngāti Rangitihi and Ngāti Hinekura gifted us our whakatauākī.
A whakatauākī is a Māori proverb or saying embodying the values, wisdom, wit, and common sense of tangata whenua (people of the land). They are usually short and concise, using symbolism and metaphor to convey key messages.
Kua raranga tahi tātou he whāriki ipurangi mō āpōpō
Together, we have woven a digital mat for the future.
Te Korowai o Ipurangi Aotearoa
Te Korowai o Ipurangi Aotearoa (Te Korowai) adorns InternetNZ | Ipurangi Aotearoa, guiding how we enliven Te Tiriti o Waitangi and inspiring our collective aspiration to serve all of Aotearoa with courage, integrity and distinction. To find out more go to this page.
Our commitment to te reo Māori
Te reo Māori is an official language of Aotearoa New Zealand. Using te reo Māori is part of our everyday work at InternetNZ, and is reflected in the Constitution of our Society.
We use te reo Māori in our communications and across our channels. This is an important part of our identity as an organisation. While we appreciate those who take the time to provide feedback, we will no longer respond to complaints about our use of te reo Māori.
If you come across kupu (words) you don’t understand, we encourage you to explore Te Aka Māori Dictionary — a free and easy-to-use resource at your fingertips.

MOU with MBIE
In May 2016, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) to manage the .nz domain name space. Under this MOU, we have a duty to manage the domain name in service to the local Internet community.
Note: An amendment to Appendix 1 of the MoU was made in August 2025.
