We are excited to be supporting Māori development within the tech industry, by sponsoring Te Papatipu Matihiko to run Mātauranga Wero Hanga 2022.
Off the back of 2 years of success with Get into Games Aotearoa, this will be a 1 day Minecraft Esports Experience with teams from Kura within Ngā Kura ā Iwi o Aotearoa. Teams will take part in a collaborative speed build challenge, with 20 mins to complete a build based on a mātauranga Māori understanding of papakāinga.
Gaming and esports has fundamentally changed how tamariki and rangatahi engage with the world. It shapes the language they use and how they express themselves. It involves friendly and competitive online gaming playing solo, duo and in teams across multiple types of games and platforms. Rangatahi have immersed themselves in this digital realm, and unless te reo Māori is easily accessible in the spaces where children live, work and play, an incredible opportunity is lost to further embed te reo Māori me Mātaruanga Māori within their lives.
That's where Te Papatipu Matihiko come in. They are a recently formed collective of existing organisations working in the esports and digital tech education space. Te Papatipu Matihiko has developed this expo style esports competition. It will provide primary/intermediate schools and Kura Kaupapa Māori with a series of workshops and events focused on competitive esports, digital and creative tech pathways with inspiring speakers. It will all be professionally broadcast and live streamed!
They have already worked with over 6000 students across 125 schools to great success. With this tournament they give young people the opportunity to explore the pathways that digital and creative tech offers in a handson way. Plus they will be supported to navigate online spaces safely and effectively while celebrating te reo Māori in a way that is authentic.
