Humanity Matters NZ — new research on disinformation
, CIARA ARNOT SENIOR COMMUNITY ADVISOR •
We're excited to share this new report, Misinformation and Disinformation in Aotearoa: Through the Lens of Online Antisemitism by Humanity Matters New Zealand. This report centres the voices of people impacted by disinformation online. It offers a valuable template for others working to understand how it can affect a community.
Humanity Matters New Zealand (HMNZ) is an organisation focused on human rights, particularly race, ethnicity, sexuality and gender, and specialisation in genocide. It aims to provide curriculum-based materials for educators and students on human rights and case studies on genocides around the world. In this report, they seek to understand the impacts of online disinformation upon minority communities and explore how we might shape solutions to overcome this in Aotearoa.
In the report, HMNZ has gathered perspectives of people who experience disinformation in Aotearoa. Recognising the heightened impact of disinformation on marginalised communities, they explored the issue from the perspective of the Jewish in New Zealand as a starting point. As with any group, the Jewish community in New Zealand is rich and complex. The approach taken here provides a valuable example for anyone looking to develop solutions with the voices of the people at the core.
This report provides an eye-opening account of the impacts of disinformation on individuals, the challenges for teachers and the long-term effects on the Jewish community in Aotearoa.
The insights and reflections offer a path forward in terms of short-term ways to build critical thinking and understanding and a long-term vision for social change with a more connected, inclusive and safe Aotearoa.
