New Zealand’s Internet Insights 2022
Welcome to this year’s Internet Insights report, an in-depth survey of New Zealand’s online attitudes and behaviours. The survey was compiled by Kantar Public, who polled more than 1,000 people in Aotearoa to reveal how the Internet is impacting our lives.
Concerns and safetyA diversity of concerns
Some groups in Aotearoa are significantly more concerned than others about certain aspects of the Internet.
63% of Pacific peoples are either extremely or very concerned about people from low socio-economic backgrounds having limited access to the Internet. This is compared to 37% as an average for all New Zealanders.
59% of Pacific peoples are either extremely or very concerned about the cost of the Internet. This is compared to 34% as an average for all New Zealanders.
71% of Pacific peoples are either extremely or very concerned about people becoming socially or physically isolated from each other. This is compared to 49% as an average for all New Zealanders.
60% of people with disabilities are either extremely or very concerned about people becoming socially or physically isolated from each other. This is compared to 49% as an average for all New Zealanders.
61% of people with disabilities are either extremely or very concerned about online conspiracy theories. This is compared to 51% as an average for all New Zealanders.
52% of people with disabilities are either extremely or very concerned about poor access in remote areas. This is compared to 44% as an average for all New Zealanders.
81% of women are either extremely or very concerned about young people accessing inappropriate content. This is compared to 66% average for men.
74% of women are either extremely or very concerned about cyber bullying. This is compared to 59% average for men.
66% of women are either extremely or very concerned that the internet is a forum for extremist material and hate speech. This is compared to 52% average for men.
Internet use Online Aotearoa is growing — and evolving
We're using the Internet more than we ever have before.
Fast fibre Internet is reaching and connecting an increasing amount of people across Aotearoa, accelerating our use.
But not everyone is finding it easy to connect.

Meta dominates social media, but competition is growing
Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and Whatsapp are all in the top five for New Zealand's social media users. Below are the percentage of New Zealanders using these Meta platforms once a day or more often.
TikTok is the fastest growing social media platform in New Zealand, doubling its daily users in just two years.
Benefits of the InternetTaking the good with the bad
Although the majority of people continue to think that the positives of the Internet outweigh the negatives, this is on a downward trend.

The top three key social benefits of the Internet identified by New Zealanders remain the same as last year.

53% of New Zealanders — who can work from home — would consider relocating in New Zealand if they could take their job with them.
