New Zealand’s Internet Insights 2022

Welcome to this year’s Internet Insights report, an in-depth survey of New Zealand’s online attitudes and behaviours. The survey was compiled by Kantar Public, who polled more than 1,000 people in Aotearoa to reveal how the Internet is impacting our lives.

Concerns and safetyA diversity of concerns

Some groups in Aotearoa are significantly more concerned than others about certain aspects of the Internet.

Pacific peoples are much more concerned about

63% of Pacific peoples are either extremely or very concerned about people from low socio-economic backgrounds having limited access to the Internet. This is compared to 37% as an average for all New Zealanders.

59% of Pacific peoples are either extremely or very concerned about the cost of the Internet. This is compared to 34% as an average for all New Zealanders.

Socially or physically isolated

71% of Pacific peoples are either extremely or very concerned about people becoming socially or physically isolated from each other. This is compared to 49% as an average for all New Zealanders.

People with disabilities are more concerned about some aspects of the Internet

52% of people with disabilities are either extremely or very concerned about poor access in remote areas. This is compared to 44% as an average for all New Zealanders.

Women are much more concerned than men about some aspects of the Internet

81% of women are either extremely or very concerned about young people accessing inappropriate content. This is compared to 66% average for men.

74% of women are either extremely or very concerned about cyber bullying. This is compared to 59% average for men.

66% of women are either extremely or very concerned that the internet is a forum for extremist material and hate speech. This is compared to 52% average for men.

Internet use Online Aotearoa is growing — and evolving

We're using the Internet more than we ever have before.

99% Of online New Zealanders use the Internet at least once a week at home

Fast fibre Internet is reaching and connecting an increasing amount of people across Aotearoa, accelerating our use.

But not everyone is finding it easy to connect.

Meta dominates social media, but competition is growing
