Today Pew released its research into the state of the news media for 2015 in the United States. One of its major findings was that 39 of the top 50 digital news sites saw more traffic from mobile devices than from desktop.
InternetNZ Chief Executive Jordan Carter said this is part of the changing landscape of Internet use and is a huge blinking neon sign to website owners that they need to get mobile friendly.
"While people using desktop computers spent longer on websites, the fact that more websites are getting the majority of their users from mobile shows how important it is that websites are mobile friendly.
The Pew research also showed that a lot of people are getting their news from social media like Facebook.
"People are no longer getting their news-fix from sitting down in front of the 6pm news. We're getting it when we want it, and through the channels we want it. This is how the Internet is changing the way we consume content," said Mr Carter.
"The Innovation partnership, of which ItnernetNZ is a member has done research highlighting the billion dollar opportunity that exists for New Zealand, through good use of the Internet. Research like Pew's just confirms that."
